About

This project was born out of a mild frustration with missing a memo about an ongoing shift of the meaning of the words journal and diary. Given my remarkable inconsistency in keeping diaries throughout my life, I had decided to switch to a more minimalist alternative in the summer of 2020. After a short episode of keeping microjournal or bullet journal style summaries of my days, I figured there had to be better options. Many alternatives were "productivity journals" which catered to a particular lifestyle that I despise. I wanted a journal that was not a to-do list for days I cannot know anything about but an old-fashioned diary for days that are fresh in memory. So, I thought "What activity do I do every day that might form a strong connection with the events of that day?" and settled with the idea of choosing one musical piece per day as a form of journaling. In January 2022, I challenged myself to make a working prototype of this webapp in a weekend. In 2023, I revisited the project for a visual overhaul. You can think of it as a weird, encrypted, digital diary where keys are publicly available but the locks are not and the keys make weird sounds.
